The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens could not do the many events and activities it does without the help of  volunteers. Can you help?

Become  a Volunteer

Training includes learning about the history of our Zoo, the plants and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert, and Outreach Programs.

Docent Training

Front Desk Volunteer

Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park depends on volunteers to assist the Zoo

in numerous ways.  Our volunteers  donate thousands of hours each year.  The volunteers

are recognized each year at a Volunteer Appreciation Banquet.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Front desk - greet visitors and collect Zoo fee
  • Help maintain the plants of the Zoo.
  • If you have special interest, you can contact the Volunteer

Coordinator at 575-887-5516 to see if there is something

you can do to help the Zoo.

  • Docents - (Volunteer Teachers) help with:

             1. Guided Tours for school and adult groups

             2. Moon Walks

             3. Zoo Camp

             4. Outreach Educational Programs

             5.  Assist with our many Special Events

             6. Conduct Story Time for preschoolers - read a story, take a short walk in the Zoo, and provide a craft.

This program  is provided when the public schools are in session.

Want to become a docent?  Those interested attend training led by staff and volunteer educators for 8 weeks.

The fee for the training is $35.00, which includes the Docent Manuel, a docent t-shirt, name badge, and a

one year Individual Membership to the Zoo.
