You may notice a hard hat, ball, or even a pizza box in an enclosure, these are not trash. Animals which are used to covering many miles of territory in the wild need stimulation when confined to a small area. These are called enrichment items.

Open every day except Christmas day

in Carlsbad, New Mexico

 Winter Hours

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last zoo entry 3:30 p.m.

This site is built and maintained by the Friends of the Living Desert, a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding the New Mexico Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in its mission to educate the public about the land we live in, its diversities and beauties. This park would not be the outstanding place  that it is without the support of the many individuals and organizations that make it happen.

All of the animals in this zoo are either rescued or

captive born and cannot be released into the wild.
